Tawaf: Going around the Kaaba
Tawaf is what?
Tawaf is circling the Kaaba seven times in an anticlockwise direction while beseeching Allah. It stands for the unity of the world’s Muslims in their reverence of one God.
How to go about tawaf
- Start at the Black Stone (Hajar alAswad).
- Touch and kiss it if feasible; otherwise, point toward it while reciting: “Bismillah Allahu Akbar” (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest).
- Do seven rounds around the Kaaba.
- Seeking Allah’s mercy and direction, repeat supplications in every round.
- Pray two rakats, drink Zamzam water, and complete Tawaf at Maqam Ibrahim.
- Meaning of tawaf in spiritual terms
- Circling the Kaaba depicts the total submission of the believers to God, thereby showing Allah their praise.
- Shows the unity of the Ummah: Muslims from every background, race, and nation live in harmony.
- The focal point of worship, not an object of worship itself, the Kaaba reinforces monotheism.
Walking between Safa and Marwah is called “sa’i.”
- Sa’i means to run back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, trying to find water for Hagar’s son in Muslims’ hajj pilgrimage.
- Seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, sa’i is the walking. It honors the fight of Hajar (AS), Prophet Ibrahim’s wife, who looked for water for her son Ismail (AS) and was granted Zamzam.
How to Do Sa’i
- Start at Safa, facing the Kaaba, and say: “Certainly, Safa and Marwah are some of the signs of Allah.”
- Striding rapidly seven times between the two hills.
- Women should walk at a regular pace; men should run between the two green lights.
- Throughout the flirations, utter supplications and beg Allah’s grace.
- End at Marwah; make the needed supplications.
Spiritual Meaning of Sa’i
- Hajar’s (AS) perseverance was honored with the well of Zamzam; this symbolizes faith in Allah and patience.
- It shows resilience and faith; it reminds people to have trust in Allah’s plan even in difficult times.
- Represents life’s difficulties: The ups and downs of Sa’i reflect the complexities of life, thereby underlining dependence on God.
